What was very interesting was the number of images that were defaced, particularly the cartouches, the collection of symbols that represented individual pharaohs. Succeeding pharaohs would gouge out the old cartouches in an attempt to erase the memory of the previous one, then carve their own cartouche deeper into the stone in an attempt to foil others' attempts to erase their cartouche.
