The entry to Strasbourg's enormous cathedral. Interesting fact: it was the tallest building in the world for a couple hundred years - over two hundred years after its completion (and almost five hundred years after it was begun (1176 to 1439)) In 1647, St. Mary's Church in Germany was hit by lightning and dethroned two years after surpassing the Lincoln Cathedral in England as the tallest building (which lost its title when part of its tower collapsed during a storm). Defeat came at th hands of St. Nikolai Church in Hamburg, Germany in 1874, which eventually lost out to the Rouen Cathedral in Normandy…in 1876. Got all that? |
